From the Garret: Archives

In Praise of Readers

Writers are a very insecure group. We always doubt that we'll ever write another book as good as the last one. In fact, we're pretty convinced we'll never write even another sentence as good as the last one. It's an occupational hazard.

That's why our readers are so important to us. I was reminded of this by my recent weekend at the New Jersey Romance Writers' conference (the best writers' conference anywhere!). There I was lucky enough to get together with three of my favorite supporters: writer Penny D., bookseller Debbie S., and bookseller/reader's group leader Elsie H. (see photos). Of course, all three are passionate about books or they wouldn't be doing what they are. Talking with them about our favorite subject is always a pleasure.

They also reminded me of why I write: for my readers. Without the support of people who truly enjoy my books, it would be much more difficult to sit in my garret all alone and create my fictional worlds. Harder yet is braving the slings and arrows of the publishing business. Folks like Penny, Debbie and Elsie are the reason I keep going. When they tell me they can't wait to read my next book, it makes all the ups and downs worthwhile. It spurs me on to write a better book. Sometimes it's all that keeps me writing at all.

So please know that the email and snail mail you send me, the entries you write in my guest book, and your comments on the contest entries mean the world to me. Your encouragement can change the whole mood of my day. Your words make me a better writer. You're truly important to me and to every other writer out there.

Don't ever hesitate to send an enthusiastic note to your favorite author when you finish her book. Even if she doesn't answer you, be assured that she read it and treasured it. Know that you added to the fire of her creativity. Remember that you're the reason she sits at the keyboard for hours on end.

One more thing: thank you!
